Step 1 of 6
Plan the Outcome
Decide whether your contribution is a Guide, define the result a reader will produce, and outline the shortest useful sequence.
An ATM Guide helps a reader produce or verify an outcome. It is not simply an article divided into pages.
| Choose a Guide when… | Choose a Blog post when… |
|---|---|
| The reader will build, configure, test, or diagnose something | The reader needs an explanation, analysis, or opinion |
| Steps must happen in a useful order | Sections can stand alone without completion state |
| Each step has an observable checkpoint | The conclusion is understanding rather than a working result |
Write the outcome first
Use a concrete sentence that begins with a verb. A strong outcome names both the artifact and the evidence that it works.
Build a local MCP server with one typed tool, then verify discovery and invocation with MCP Inspector.
Avoid broad outcomes such as “learn about MCP servers.” They do not tell the reader when the Guide is complete.
Outline the shortest useful sequence
- Establish the starting stateState the tools, access, and knowledge the reader needs before step one.
- Move one meaningful action at a timeGive each step a single purpose that can be completed and checked.
- End with evidenceMake the final step prove that the promised outcome works.
- The outcome starts with an action verb
- The reader can tell exactly when the Guide is complete
- Every planned step contributes directly to the outcome
- The sequence can be followed without hidden prerequisites
